Christine Felstead's Yoga for RunnersTM
at Toronto Marathon
Sunday, October 15, 2006

Once again, Christine Felstead's Yoga for Runners has pioneered new ground. Thanks to the receptivity of the Toronto Marathon organizers, we had a tent at the finish line where runners could participate in a post-run stretch. Along with a number of qualified Yoga for Runners instructors, we led runners (and some of their support team too) through some great quad, hamstring, calf and lower back stretches. The instruction was ongoing so some stayed for a few minutes while others stayed for up to 30 minutes.

The response was very positive - many times the tent was filled to capacity. Everyone leaving the tent had a smile on their face and walked a little more upright!!

To my knowledge, this was the first race where yoga had an official place at the finish line. As the world of yoga and running becomes more understood and more tightly bound, my vision is that every race will include a yoga tent at the finish. What a great way to speed recovery and prevent those muscles from seizing up.

If you are a race organizer and wish to also include yoga into your post-race events as a service to your runners, please contact me directly. Thank you to the Toronto Marathon organizers, the instructors and volunteers that helped to make this inaugural event a success.
